From Shopify Scripts to Functions: what changed for payment rules

Updated · 4 min read · Trifid Media LLC

Shopify Scripts no longer run. Shopify stopped all editing and publishing of Scripts on April 15, 2026 and switched every Script off on June 30, 2026. Payment rules (hiding, renaming or reordering payment methods) now run as payment customization Functions, which come inside apps. If your store used a payment Script, its rules stopped working on June 30 and need a Functions-based replacement.

What were the dates?

Shopify's help pages now say that Scripts still published on June 30, 2026 were deactivated and no longer work.

What did payment Scripts do?

Scripts were small pieces of Ruby code written in Shopify's Script Editor app. Shopify's App Store listing for Script Editor says the app was only available to Shopify Plus customers. There were three kinds:

  • Line item scripts changed prices and gave discounts in the cart.
  • Shipping scripts changed or discounted shipping options.
  • Payment scripts renamed, hid or reordered payment gateways.

Payment scripts ran when checkout reached the payment page. Shopify notes they didn't affect payment options shown before that point, such as Apple Pay.

For example, a payment Script could hide Cash on Delivery for large orders, or for customers with a certain tag.

What replaced them?

For payment rules, the replacement is the Payment Customization Function API. A payment customization can:

  • hide a payment method
  • rename a payment method (except methods shown as a logo, such as wallets)
  • reorder payment methods
  • set payment terms (Shopify Plus only)
  • send a B2B order for review before it's placed (B2B on Shopify Plus only)

The main practical change is where the logic lives. A Script was code that you or a developer wrote in the Script Editor. A Function is part of an app: you install the app and set the rules in your admin, with no code. A store can have at most 25 active payment customizations.

A Function can base its decision on the cart total and subtotal, the products in the cart (their tags, collections, type and vendor), the customer's tags and order count, the delivery address, and the checkout's country and language. COD rules like these fit within that:

Old payment Script ruleWhat the Function looks at
Hide COD above an order valueThe cart total
Hide COD for tagged customersCustomer tags
Hide COD for some productsProduct tags or collections
Hide COD for some countries or areasThe delivery address or checkout country
Rename CODThe rename operation (Arabic shoppers can get an Arabic name)

You're on Shopify Plus and used payment Scripts: what should you check now?

Your Scripts are already off. If a Script hid COD for risky orders, COD has been showing to every shopper since June 30, 2026 unless you replaced it.

  1. Find out what your Scripts did. Shopify generates a Scripts customizations report. From your Shopify admin, go to Apps > Script Editor, and in the banner select Replace Shopify Scripts. The report has a section for each type you used, including Payment gateways, and lists the Scripts that were active before June 30. You can export it as a CSV file.
  2. Decide which rules you still need. Skip rules for products or campaigns you no longer run.
  3. Pick a replacement for each rule. Shopify's options are an existing app built on Functions, or your own solution built with Functions. On Plus you can also use Shopify's Checkout Blocks app, whose payment rules include cart total, customer tag and shipping country. If you build your own, Shopify says custom Functions-based apps must be created in the Dev Dashboard and then connected to your store, not created in the Shopify admin.
  4. Check what's active. Go to Settings > Payments. The Payment customizations section lists the customizations on your store. Keep an eye on the limit of 25.
  5. Test every rule at checkout. Payment customizations run on the online checkout and on the checkout link of a draft order. They don't run in the Shopify admin or POS. See how to test checkout payment rules with draft orders.

You're not on Shopify Plus: does this affect you?

Not directly. Scripts were never available on your plan, so nothing on your store stopped working on June 30.

The part that matters for you is Functions. Shopify says stores on any plan can use public apps from the Shopify App Store that contain Functions. So payment rules that needed Plus in the days of Scripts, such as hiding Cash on Delivery above a cart total, are possible on other plans with the right app. You only need Plus for a custom app that contains a Function, or for a few Plus-only features such as payment terms.

Khaleeji COD is built this way for Cash on Delivery. It uses a single payment customization for all its COD rules.
