How to hide a payment method on Shopify: every option explained
There are two kinds of "hiding" on Shopify. If you want a payment method gone for everyone, deactivate it in Settings > Payments. If you want it hidden only for some checkouts (big carts, certain products, certain customers or countries), you need a payment customization, which comes from an app. Which app you can use depends on your Shopify plan.
Option 1: Turn the method off for everyone
This needs no app and works on every plan. Use it when you no longer want to offer a method at all.
For a manual method such as Cash on Delivery, Shopify's steps are:
- From your Shopify admin, go to Settings > Payments.
- In the Payment providers area, find the Manual payment methods box and select Manage next to the method.
- Select Deactivate payment method and confirm.
Methods that come from a payment provider (cards, wallets, buy now, pay later) are switched on and off in that provider's settings, and the provider's help pages explain the steps.
This is all or nothing. Shopify's payment settings have no option to show a method only above or below a cart total, only for some products, or only for some customers. For that, read on.
Option 2: A public app with a payment customization
Shopify lets apps change the payment step with payment customization Functions. A Function runs while the shopper is at checkout and can hide, rename or reorder payment methods. Shopify's own examples include hiding a method for carts above or below a value and hiding a method based on the customer's country.
What a Function can look at includes:
- the cart total, subtotal and each item in the cart
- product tags, collections, product type and vendor
- customer tags and the customer's number of orders
- the delivery address and the checkout's country and language
Shopify says stores on any plan can use public apps from the Shopify App Store that contain Functions. Its checkout customization page adds that the store must be on at least the Basic plan.
To switch one on, install the app, then follow Shopify's steps:
- From your Shopify admin, go to Settings > Payments.
- In the Payment customizations section, select Manage.
- Add or select the customization, configure it, save, then activate it.
The Payment customizations section is also where you can see what's active on your store.
A store can have at most 25 active payment customizations. Each active customization counts, so the limit matters if you stack many payment apps.
Khaleeji COD uses a payment customization of this type and only touches Cash on Delivery. It hides COD when a rule matches and never hides cards, wallets or buy now, pay later options.
Option 3: Shopify's Checkout Blocks app (Shopify Plus only)
Checkout Blocks is Shopify's own app. Its payment section can hide, rename and reorder payment methods. Shopify says creating payment method customizations with it is available only on the Shopify Plus plan.
The hiding rules Shopify lists include:
| Rule group | Examples of rules |
|---|---|
| Cart | Cart total, cart subtotal, cart currency, total quantity |
| Customer | Customer tag, order count, amount spent, logged in or not |
| Delivery | Shipping country, shipping state (province), delivery method |
| Product | Collection, product type, vendor |
| Market | The Shopify Market of the checkout |
Shopify's list doesn't include a product tag rule, so for product-based hiding you would group products by collection, type or vendor instead. Shipping country and state rules need a delivery address, so they can't hide anything before the shopper enters one.
Option 4: A custom app with your own Function (Shopify Plus only)
A developer can write a payment customization Function for your store alone. Shopify says only stores on a Shopify Plus plan can use custom apps that contain Function APIs. This makes sense when your rules are unusual and no public app covers them.
What about Shopify Scripts?
Before Functions, some stores hid payment methods with payment Scripts. That route is closed. Shopify stopped Script editing and publishing on April 15, 2026, and Scripts were set to stop running on June 30, 2026. If your store relied on one, see from Shopify Scripts to Functions: what changed for payment rules.
What can't be hidden?
Payment customizations have limits that apply to every app, including Checkout Blocks:
- Admin, POS and order editing. Shopify lists the Shopify admin, POS, order editing, draft orders created in the admin, the Create Order API and recurring subscription orders as places where payment customizations don't run. They do run on the online checkout, including the checkout link you send for a draft order.
- Inside Shop Pay. Shopify says that in Shop Pay, payment customizations only affect the gift card field, not other payment methods.
- Express wallets. You can remove a wallet such as Apple Pay or Google Pay from the express section or the payment section of checkout, but you can't reorder wallets. Hiding a wallet in only one of those places (for example, only the express button at the top) is available only on Shopify Plus.
- Names with logos. Methods shown as a logo, such as Shop Pay, Apple Pay, Google Pay and other wallets, can't be renamed. They can still be hidden, within the limits above.
- Card fields in the US and Canada. On plans other than Plus, Shopify limits these customizations to non-card payment methods for stores in the United States and Canada.
- Restricted methods. Shopify says plan and geographical restrictions apply. When a method is restricted, an app's instruction to change it doesn't take effect at checkout.
Which option should you choose?
| Your situation | Use |
|---|---|
| You don't want to offer the method at all | Option 1: deactivate it |
| Any plan, hide a method for some checkouts | Option 2: a public app |
| Shopify Plus, your rules fit Checkout Blocks' list | Option 3: Checkout Blocks |
| Shopify Plus, unusual rules no app covers | Option 4: a custom app |
If the method you want to limit is Cash on Delivery, two simple starting rules are a cart total limit and a list of products that shouldn't ship with COD. See how to hide COD above a cart total and how to turn off COD for certain products.
