Nudging shoppers from cash to card without losing the sale

Updated · 5 min read · Trifid Media LLC

To get more prepaid orders without losing sales, make paying online the easiest and clearest choice at checkout, and keep cash on delivery for shoppers who need it. Put cards and wallets first, give every method a clear name, show why paying online is safe, offer instalments where they fit, and hide COD only on the carts where a refusal would cost you most. Removing COD for everyone is the blunt version of this, and it can lose you the shoppers who only buy when they can pay at the door.

Why move shoppers to online payment at all?

A prepaid order takes away the moment at the door when the shopper decides whether to hand over the money, which is where a COD refusal happens. You also stop waiting for your courier to pass the cash on, and you have less cash to reconcile.

The aim is a better mix of prepaid and COD orders. Shoppers who would only buy with COD should still be able to.

Put online payment first

The first payment option is the first one the shopper reads. Shopify lets apps change the payment step with payment customization Functions, which can rename, reorder and hide payment methods at checkout. With an app that reorders methods, you can put card and wallet options above cash on delivery.

A store can have up to 25 active payment customizations. If you use several payment apps, check that they don't work against each other, for example one moving COD down and another moving it back up. Payment customizations also don't run everywhere: Shopify's documentation lists places they don't support, including the cart and point of sale. They apply to the online checkout.

Use names that say what happens

A shopper choosing between "Credit card", "Cash on Delivery (COD)" and a gateway brand name they don't recognise may simply pick the one they understand. Make each name plain:

  • Say what the shopper pays with: "Card (Visa, Mastercard)" is clearer than a payment company's name. If your provider controls the name, a payment customization can rename it at checkout.
  • Keep the COD name plain too. «الدفع عند الاستلام» on the Arabic checkout and "Cash on Delivery" in English is enough. See how to rename Cash on Delivery at Shopify checkout.
  • Show the same names on your product pages, FAQ and policy pages, so nothing at checkout is new.

Show why paying online is safe

Some shoppers choose COD because they don't want to pay before the parcel arrives. You can answer that worry without pushing:

  • Explain who handles the card details. Shopify says it is "certified Level 1 PCI DSS compliant". PCI DSS is the card industry's security standard for handling card data. One line in your FAQ ("Card payments are processed securely through our checkout") is enough.
  • Make the refund promise clear. Say how prepaid orders are refunded if something goes wrong, and how long it takes. Shopify links your return policy in the checkout footer and on the order review page, so a clear return policy is visible at the moment of paying.
  • Show you're reachable. A WhatsApp number, a phone number and a physical address on your contact page reassure shoppers who have never bought from you.
  • Show the logos of the methods you accept in your footer or near the add to cart button.

Offer the payment methods shoppers already use

  • Cards and wallets. Shopify Payments is available for stores in the United Arab Emirates. Shopify's list of supported countries doesn't include Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain or Oman, so stores based there use a third-party payment provider. Check which local cards and wallets your provider supports in each country you sell to.
  • Buy now, pay later (BNPL). Instalment options let a shopper split a larger purchase. Tabby has a Shopify app, "Tabby Pay Later", that lets shoppers split purchases in 4. Tamara describes its own Shopify payment app on its website. Each provider sets its own countries, currencies, order limits and fees, so check those with the provider before you add it.

Instalments make the most difference on larger carts, which are also the carts where a COD refusal costs you most. That makes BNPL a useful option to have when you hide COD above a cart total.

Should you offer an incentive for paying online?

You don't have to. Clear names, a sensible order and trust signals cost you no margin, so start there. If you want to add an incentive, keep it small and simple:

  • Faster dispatch for prepaid orders ("Paid orders ship today").
  • Free delivery on prepaid orders above an amount.
  • A small discount, if your margin allows it.

Before you promise any incentive, test it in a real checkout with cash on delivery selected. The incentive must apply only to online payments, and some discount setups can't tell how the shopper paid. If yours can't, choose an incentive you handle after the order, such as dispatching paid orders first.

If you're weighing a COD fee instead, read hide COD, COD fee, partial COD or OTP: which fits your store. A reward for paying online and a charge for paying cash can feel very different to the shopper, even when the money is the same.

Hide COD only where the risk is highest

Use the nudges above for every cart. For a few carts, it makes sense to offer online payment only: customers who refused a COD order before, very large carts, large first orders and products you can't resell. Everyone else keeps COD.

Khaleeji COD hides COD for those carts and nothing else. It only touches the cash on delivery method (it can hide or rename it, but it doesn't reorder payment methods), so cards, Apple Pay, Tabby, Tamara and your other methods stay exactly as they are, and the shopper still has a way to pay. To pick a limit from your own orders, see how to hide COD above a cart total.

After any change, watch two numbers for a few weeks: the share of orders paid online and your checkout conversion rate. If prepaid orders rise and conversion holds, keep the change. If conversion drops, ease off.
