Cash on delivery in Qatar: a guide for Shopify stores

Updated · 5 min read · Trifid Media LLC

Cash on delivery in Qatar works as it does elsewhere in the GCC: the courier hands over the parcel and collects the money. The difference for a Shopify store is the address. Shopify's checkout form for Qatar has no region and no postcode field, so you can't limit COD by region code. Build your Qatar rules from cart totals, customer tags, product tags and, with care, city names. And give shoppers an online way to pay that they trust.

What does Shopify's checkout ask for in Qatar?

Shopify publishes the address formats its checkout uses in its open-source Worldwide data. For Qatar, the form asks for:

  • first and last name, and a company name if you show that field
  • address line 1 and address line 2
  • city
  • phone number

There's no region (province) dropdown and no postcode. Shopify's own sample Qatar address is "Lussail City, P.O. Box 1968" with "Doha" as the city.

Two things follow for COD:

  • A region rule has nothing to match. In the UAE, a rule can block COD for a whole emirate by its code. In Qatar the checkout never records a region.
  • The city is free text. Shoppers type whatever they like, in English or Arabic, with different spellings.

How are addresses written in Qatar?

Qatar Post says home deliveries use the Anwani addressing system. The blue plates on buildings show three numbers: zone, street and building. The Universal Postal Union's guide for Qatar adds that mail is delivered either to a P.O. box, or by phone plus zone and street numbers, and that "Doha" should be written as the locality on every mail item.

What this means for a COD store:

  • A P.O. box isn't a doorstep. If a shopper gives only a P.O. box, the courier has to phone them to find out where to go. A wrong or switched-off number then means no delivery.
  • Zone, street and building numbers are what a courier needs. Ask for them.
  • The city field may tell you little. If many shoppers write "Doha" whatever their area, a city list won't separate one part of the country from another.

How do you get better Qatar addresses at checkout?

Shopify says address line 2 is meant for apartment or floor numbers, and that making it required can stop some customers from finishing their purchase. So don't force it for zone numbers. These steps help instead:

  1. Make the phone number required. In your Shopify admin, go to Settings > Checkout. In the Customer information section, set Shipping address phone number to Required. Shopify suggests this when your carrier needs a phone number, which a COD courier does.
  2. Ask for zone, street and building numbers after the order. Your order confirmation message (SMS, WhatsApp or email) can ask the shopper to reply with any numbers that are missing. Check them before the parcel leaves.

Which online payments can shoppers in Qatar use instead of COD?

Hiding COD for a risky order only works if the shopper has another way to pay. In Qatar, these are the options to check:

  • International credit and debit cards, through your payment provider.
  • Local debit cards on NAPS, Qatar's national card network. Qatar Central Bank's national card, Himyan, runs on NAPS. Qatar News Agency reported in March 2024 that Himyan holders can pay on local online shopping sites through the QPay payment portal. Whether your checkout accepts these cards depends on your payment provider, so ask it.
  • Apple Pay, which Apple lists as available in Qatar.
  • Fawran, Qatar Central Bank's instant payment service, launched in March 2024. People send money from their bank app using a mobile number or alias instead of an IBAN. It's a bank transfer, not a checkout button: to accept it, you'd add it as a custom manual payment method and check each payment yourself before shipping.

Check which of these your store can actually take before you hide COD for any group of shoppers.

Which COD rules fit Qatar?

RuleWorks for Qatar?Why
Hide COD above a cart totalYesDoesn't depend on the address
Hide COD on large first ordersYesCovers guests and new customers
Hide COD for tagged customersYesNeeds the customer identified at checkout
Turn off COD for tagged productsYesGood for custom or high-value items
Limit COD by region codeNoShopify's Qatar form has no region
Limit COD by city nameWith careFree text, and spellings vary

A practical way to start:

  1. Turn on the rules that ignore the address: cart total, large first order, tagged refusers and tagged products. Pick the amounts from your own order history. See how to hide COD above a cart total.
  2. Export your past Qatar orders and look at the city values. Note every spelling you actually receive, in English and Arabic.
  3. Add a city rule only if refusals clearly cluster in one place, and include every spelling you found. See how to limit COD by emirate, region or city.

Khaleeji COD can run all of these rules together. Its city rule matches exact names in English or Arabic and ignores capital letters, so list each spelling separately.

Which currency do the amount rules use?

Shopify's data lists the Qatari riyal (QAR) as Qatar's currency. Your shop's currency may be something else, such as AED. In Khaleeji COD, amounts are set in your shop's currency, and a cart in QAR is converted before the comparison. If you sell to several GCC countries, read one Shopify store, six GCC countries before you choose your amounts.

Should COD be in Arabic for Qatar shoppers?

Shopify's data lists Arabic as Qatar's language. If you offer an Arabic checkout, show the COD option in Arabic too, with the same wording you use on product pages and in messages. See what to call Cash on Delivery in Arabic.
