Cash on delivery in Bahrain: a guide for Shopify stores

Updated · 4 min read · Trifid Media LLC

Cash on delivery in Bahrain works as it does across the GCC: the courier delivers and collects the payment. For a Shopify store, the point to know is that Shopify's checkout for Bahrain doesn't ask for a governorate. COD rules for Bahrain therefore rely on cart totals, customer tags, product tags and city names. Before you hide COD for anyone, make sure your checkout offers an online option Bahraini shoppers use, such as BenefitPay or a local card.

What does Shopify's checkout ask for in Bahrain?

Shopify's open-source Worldwide data sets out the address form its checkout uses. For Bahrain the form has:

  • first and last name, and a company name if you show that field
  • address line 1 and address line 2
  • city, plus an optional postcode
  • phone number

There's no governorate (region) field. The postcode field accepts a 3 or 4 digit number. Shopify's sample Bahrain address puts "Road 2904 Building 293" in address line 1, "Manama" as the city and 329 as the postcode.

Bahrain has four governorates: Capital, Muharraq, Northern and Southern, as listed in the Ministry of Health's 2020 census tables. Because Shopify's checkout doesn't record them, a COD rule can't target a governorate directly.

How are addresses written in Bahrain?

The Universal Postal Union's guide for Bahrain gives this order:

  1. house, building or shop number
  2. street or road name or number
  3. town or village, followed by the postcode

Its example is "House 916, Road 2035, Riffa 926". The UPU says Bahraini postcodes are 3 or 4 digits, running from 1XX to 12XX, and that in a 4 digit postcode the first two digits identify the region.

For a COD store, a few habits help:

  • Ask for building, road and block numbers, and check them before you ship. If one is missing from the order, ask for it in your confirmation message.
  • Make the phone number required. In Settings > Checkout, in the Customer information section, set Shipping address phone number to Required. A courier who can't call the shopper can't arrange the handover or collect the cash.
  • Don't treat the postcode as reliable. It's optional in Shopify's form, so some orders won't have one. Base rules on fields every order has.

Which online payments can shoppers in Bahrain use?

These are the options to check with your payment provider:

  • BenefitPay, Bahrain's national e-wallet, run by The BENEFIT Company. BENEFIT says merchants can accept it in their own website or app, and that merchants sign up through an acquiring bank. Whether you can show it at Shopify checkout depends on your payment provider, so ask.
  • Credit and debit cards, including Bahraini debit cards if your provider accepts them online.
  • Apple Pay, which Apple lists as available in Bahrain.
  • Fawri+ bank transfers. The Central Bank of Bahrain lists Fawri+ among the kingdom's near real-time transfer services. It's a bank transfer, not a checkout button: to accept it, you'd add a custom manual payment method and confirm each payment before shipping.

Hiding COD only helps if the shopper can still pay. Confirm which of these your store can take first.

Which COD rules fit Bahrain?

RuleWorks for Bahrain?Why
Hide COD above a cart totalYesDoesn't depend on the address
Hide COD on large first ordersYesCovers guests and new customers
Hide COD for tagged customersYesNeeds the customer identified at checkout
Turn off COD for tagged productsYesGood for custom or high-value items
Limit COD by governorateNoShopify's Bahrain form has no region field
Limit COD by city nameYes, with careFree text, typed in English or Arabic

A sensible way to start:

  1. Turn on the rules that ignore the address: cart total, large first order, tagged repeat refusers and tagged products. Choose the amounts from your own orders. See how to hide COD on large first orders.
  2. Look at the city values on your past Bahrain orders. Note every spelling you receive, in English and Arabic.
  3. Add a city rule only where refusals or failed deliveries clearly cluster, with every spelling you found. See how to limit COD by emirate, region or city.

Khaleeji COD can run these rules together. Its city rule matches exact names in English or Arabic and ignores capital letters, so add each spelling as its own entry.

Which currency do the amount rules use?

Shopify's data lists the Bahraini dinar (BHD) as Bahrain's currency. In Khaleeji COD, amounts are set in your shop's currency, so if your shop runs in AED or SAR, a cart in BHD is converted before it's compared. If you sell to several GCC countries, see one Shopify store, six GCC countries for how to choose one set of amounts for all of them.

What should COD be called in Arabic?

Shopify's data lists both Arabic and English as languages for Bahrain. If your store offers both, give COD one clear Arabic name, such as «الدفع عند الاستلام» ("payment on receipt"), and use it everywhere: checkout, product pages and order messages. See what to call Cash on Delivery in Arabic for the choices and how to show the Arabic name only on your Arabic checkout.
