Cash on delivery in Oman: a guide for Shopify stores

Updated · 4 min read · Trifid Media LLC

Cash on delivery in Oman works as it does across the GCC: the courier delivers and collects the payment. For a Shopify store, two things shape your COD rules. Shopify's checkout for Oman doesn't ask for a governorate, so you can't limit COD by region code. And Omani postal addresses are often written around a P.O. box, which isn't a place where a courier can hand over a parcel. Build your Oman rules from cart totals, customer and product tags and city names, and make sure every order has a working phone number.

What does Shopify's checkout ask for in Oman?

Shopify's open-source Worldwide data sets out the address form its checkout uses. For Oman the form has:

  • first and last name, and a company name if you show that field
  • address line 1 and address line 2
  • an optional postcode, then the city
  • phone number

There's no governorate (region) field. Shopify's own sample Omani address shows how a P.O. box and a building can both appear: "P.O. Box 1161" in address line 1, "Al Markazi, Building Number 44, CBD" in address line 2, postcode 112 and "Ruwi" as the city.

How are addresses written in Oman?

Oman has 11 governorates, and each governorate includes several wilayats (provinces), according to Oman's Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Shopify's checkout records neither. The city field holds whatever the shopper types, such as a town or wilayat name, in English or Arabic.

The Universal Postal Union's guide for Oman shows postal addresses built around a P.O. box, a 3 digit postcode and the district, for example "P.O. Box 15, 133, Al-Khoer". That works for mail. A COD courier needs a building and a person to hand the parcel to.

What this means for a COD store:

  • Treat a P.O. box alone as an incomplete address. Ask for a building, street or landmark, and keep the P.O. box if the shopper gives it.
  • Make the phone number required. In your Shopify admin, go to Settings > Checkout. In the Customer information section, set Shipping address phone number to Required. Shopify suggests this when your carrier needs a phone number. A COD courier may need to call to find the shopper.
  • Don't build rules on the postcode. It's optional in Shopify's form, so some orders won't have one.

Which online payments can shoppers in Oman use?

These are the options to check with your payment provider:

  • Local debit cards. The Central Bank of Oman set up a national payment gateway in 2016 for online payments with debit cards issued in Oman. It runs through OmanNet, the national card switch. Ask your payment provider whether your Shopify checkout accepts these cards.
  • Maal, the national payment card. The Central Bank of Oman describes Maal as a local bank card issued by licensed banks and payment providers, usable at Omani online stores and in local apps. The central bank says the cards and where they're accepted will be announced in phases, and that your bank or payment provider updates its systems to accept them. Ask your provider about Maal too.
  • International credit and debit cards, through your payment provider.
  • Apple Pay, which Apple lists as available in Oman.

Hiding COD only helps if the shopper can still pay. Check what your store can actually take before you switch on any rule.

Which COD rules fit Oman?

RuleWorks for Oman?Why
Hide COD above a cart totalYesDoesn't depend on the address
Hide COD on large first ordersYesCovers guests and new customers
Hide COD for tagged customersYesNeeds the customer identified at checkout
Turn off COD for tagged productsYesGood for custom or high-value items
Limit COD by governorateNoShopify's Oman form has no region field
Limit COD by city or wilayatYes, with careFree text, typed in English or Arabic

A sensible way to start:

  1. Turn on the rules that ignore the address: cart total, large first order, tagged repeat refusers and tagged products. Choose the amounts from your own order history. See how to hide COD above a cart total.
  2. Use a city rule for places your courier finds hard or costly to reach. For example, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs notes that Musandam is separated from the rest of Oman by a strip of UAE land. If deliveries there cost you more or fail more often, list the town names your shoppers type for it, in English and Arabic.
  3. Check spellings in your real orders first. Export your Oman orders, look at the city values and add every variant you find. See how to limit COD by emirate, region or city.

Khaleeji COD runs these rules together. Its city rule matches exact names in English or Arabic and ignores capital letters, so each spelling needs its own entry.

Which currency do the amount rules use?

Shopify's data lists the Omani rial (OMR) as Oman's currency. In Khaleeji COD, amounts are set in your shop's currency, so if your shop runs in AED, a cart in OMR is converted before it's compared. If you sell to several GCC countries, read one Shopify store, six GCC countries before you set the amounts.

What about the Arabic name for COD?

Shopify's data lists Arabic as Oman's language. If you offer an Arabic checkout, show COD in Arabic with the same wording you use in your messages and policy page. See what to call Cash on Delivery in Arabic.
