# Setting up Khaleeji COD for Kuwait

> Kuwait is one of two GCC countries where Shopify's checkout asks for a region. Since version khaleeji-cod-4, Khaleeji COD matches Shopify's governorate codes as written, such as KW-JA. For a single area, add city names with a KW: prefix, in English and Arabic. Then test a Kuwait address.

For Kuwait you have two ways to limit Cash on Delivery by place. To cover a whole governorate, add
its Shopify code, such as `KW-JA` for Al Jahra, to **Hide COD in these emirates or regions**. To
cover one area, add its name to **Hide COD in these cities** with `KW:` in front, for example
`KW:Salmiya, KW:السالمية`. Save your rules, then test with a Kuwait address.

The rules that don't depend on the address (tagged customers, cart total, first order and `no-cod`
products) work in Kuwait exactly as they do everywhere else.

## Which governorate codes does Shopify use for Kuwait?

Shopify's address data lists six governorates for Kuwait. The shopper picks one from a list at
checkout, so the value is always one of these six codes:

| Governorate (Shopify's name) | Arabic | Code to type |
|---|---|---|
| Al Ahmadi | «الأحمدي» | `KW-AH` |
| Al Asimah | «العاصمة» | `KW-KU` |
| Al Farwaniyah | «الفروانية» | `KW-FA` |
| Al Jahra | «الجهراء» | `KW-JA` |
| Hawalli | «حولي» | `KW-HA` |
| Mubarak Al-Kabeer | «مبارك الكبير» | `KW-MU` |

Kuwait's codes already start with the country, `KW-`. The UAE's don't: Shopify writes Dubai as
`DU`, and Khaleeji COD adds the `AE-` itself. Since version khaleeji-cod-4 (26 October 2026), the app
adds the country only when it's missing, so a Kuwaiti code is compared exactly as Shopify writes
it. If you tried a Kuwait code before that date and it didn't match, test it again now. Your
saved codes don't need to change.

## How do you hide COD in a governorate?

1. Open Khaleeji COD and go to **Checkout rules**.
2. Tick **Hide COD in these emirates or regions**. In the Arabic admin it reads
«إخفاء الدفع عند الاستلام في هذه الإمارات أو المناطق».
3. Type the codes, separated by commas, for example `KW-JA, KW-AH`. An English comma or an Arabic
   comma «،» both work.
4. Click **Save rules**.

Capital letters and spaces don't matter, so `kw-ja` works too. These don't work:

- `JA` on its own. Type the full code with `KW-`.
- The governorate name. `Al Jahra` or «الجهراء» in this box matches nothing.
- A name in brackets after the code, such as `KW-JA (Al Jahra)`. Type the code only.

If you also sell in the UAE, one list can hold both countries: `AE-FU, KW-JA`.

A governorate is a large area. Use this rule when your courier or your own order history treats a
whole governorate differently. For anything smaller, use the city rule.

## How do you hide COD in one area?

The shopper types the city, and in Kuwait that's where an area name such as Salmiya goes, so an
area rule is a city rule.

1. Tick **Hide COD in these cities**. In Arabic: «إخفاء الدفع عند الاستلام في هذه المدن».
2. Type each area in English and in Arabic, with `KW:` in front, separated by commas.
3. Click **Save rules**.

> **Example:** `KW:Salmiya, KW:Salmiyah, KW:السالمية, KW:Salwa, KW:سلوى`. These names are
> examples. Use the areas and spellings from your own orders.

Why the `KW:`? A city name without a country matches in every country you ship to. Salwa is an
area in Kuwait and also a town in Saudi Arabia, so a plain `Salwa` would hide COD in both.
`KW:Salwa` keeps it to Kuwaiti addresses. [City rules for one country only](/help/country-city-rules/)
explains the format in full.

Some Kuwaiti areas with their Arabic names:

| Area | Arabic |
|---|---|
| Salmiya | «السالمية» |
| Jabriya | «الجابرية» |
| Salwa | «سلوى» |
| Fahaheel | «الفحيحيل» |
| Mahboula | «المهبولة» |
| Jleeb Al-Shuyoukh | «جليب الشيوخ» |

### Which spellings does one entry cover?

The app compares whole names after folding common spelling differences:

- Arabic: «ة» reads as «ه», «ى» as «ي», and «أ إ آ» as «ا». So `KW:السالمية` also matches
  «السالميه», `KW:سلوى` matches «سلوي», and «الأحمدي» matches «الاحمدي». Vowel marks and tatweel
  are ignored.
- English: capital letters don't matter, and hyphens read as spaces, so `KW:Jleeb Al-Shuyoukh`
  matches "jleeb al shuyoukh".

It doesn't translate, and it doesn't guess. "Salmiya" and «السالمية» are separate entries, and so
are "Salmiya" and "Salmiyah". "Salmiya" also doesn't match "Salmiya Block 10".

### Look at real orders first

Shoppers type the city themselves. Many write their area, but some may write "Kuwait City", as
Shopify's own example Kuwait address does. Export your Kuwait orders and read the shipping city
column before you build your list. Hawalli, Farwaniya and Jahra are both areas and governorates,
so decide which one you mean: the region rule covers the whole governorate, and the city rule only
matches what the shopper typed.

On the Free plan only one rule can be on, so choose the region rule or the city rule. Pro
($7.99/month) lets you use both. See [Free or Pro](/help/free-vs-pro/).

## Do the amounts work in Kuwaiti dinars?

Amounts in Khaleeji COD are in your shop's currency. The GCC preset fills in 1,500 for the cart and
500 for a first order as plain numbers, so in a KWD store they mean KWD 1,500 and KWD 500. Check
that they suit your prices and change them if not.

If your store runs in another currency, for example AED, and a Kuwaiti shopper pays in KWD, the app
converts the checkout total to your shop's currency with the rate Shopify gives it for that
checkout, then compares. [The GCC preset, rule by rule](/help/gcc-preset/) has more on choosing
the amounts.

## How do you test a Kuwait address?

Payment rules run at the online checkout, including a checkout opened from a draft order's link.
They don't run when you collect payment inside the Shopify admin. Make sure your store ships to
Kuwait, so checkout accepts the address.

1. Create a draft order with a Kuwait shipping address: a governorate on your list, or an area from
your city list typed in the city field.
2. Keep the cart below your first-order amount (500 with the preset), so no other rule hides COD.
3. Open the draft order's checkout link in a private window and go to the payment step. COD should
be gone, and cards and other methods should still be there.
4. Change the address to a governorate or area that isn't on your list. COD should come back.

To check the Arabic name, open the checkout from the Arabic version of your store (often a `/ar`
address). COD should show as «الدفع عند الاستلام». The steps are in
[how to test checkout payment rules with draft orders](/guides/test-payment-rules-draft-orders/).

> **Note:** Shopify can show extra address fields for Kuwait, such as **Block**. Its help page says
> these regional fields aren't available when a store uses apps or customizations that read or
> edit address information. Test your checkout with a Kuwait address and check that the form still
> asks for everything your courier needs.
