# How to tag many Shopify customers at once

> In Customers, select the customers (or a whole segment), click the menu next to Edit customers and choose Add tags or Remove tags. Use a segment to build the list first. Be careful with CSV import: overwriting existing customers replaces all their data, including tags.

To tag many customers at once, go to **Customers** in your Shopify admin, select the customers,
click the menu icon next to **Edit customers** and choose **Add tags**. To reach more than one
page of customers, select a whole segment. Removing a tag works the same way with **Remove
tags**. A CSV import can tag customers too, but if you overwrite existing customers, Shopify
replaces all their data, including their tags.

## How do you add a tag to many customers?

On a computer:

1. From your Shopify admin, go to **Customers**.
2. Tick the customers you want. Tick **Customer name** at the top to select everyone on the page.
3. Click the menu icon next to **Edit customers**, then click **Add tags**.
4. Type the tag, for example `cod-refused`, or pick it from the list.
5. Click **Save**.

On the Shopify mobile app, open **Customers**, choose **Select customers**, tick the customers,
then tap **Add tags**. Shopify's help says you can select up to 25 items at a time on a mobile
device.

## How do you select more than 50 customers?

Shopify lists at most 50 customers per page. To go further:

- **Every customer in the store:** with the **All customers** segment open, tick **Customer
name**, then click **Select all 50+ customers in your store**.
- **Every customer in a segment or search:** open the segment or run the search, tick **Customer
name**, then click **Select all 50+ customers in this segment**.

Then use **Add tags** or **Remove tags** as above.

## How do you build the list first with a segment?

A **customer segment** is a saved filter of customers. Shopify's help says that to filter
customers by tag, you create a segment. In the segment editor you write a filter such as
`customer_tags CONTAINS 'cod-review'`.

Other filters Shopify documents include `number_of_orders`, `amount_spent`, `last_order_date`,
`customer_countries` and `customer_cities`. Save the segment, open it, select all, and tag.

There is one gap for COD work: Shopify's segment filter reference lists no filter for payment
method or cancelled orders. So you can't build a "refused COD orders" segment. Start from your
orders instead, as in the next section.

## How do you tag the customers behind a list of orders?

This is the common COD case: you have a list of refused orders and want to tag the people who
placed them. The Orders page can tag orders in bulk, but it has no action that tags their
customers. Shopify Flow can do it, because Flow lets you run a workflow by hand on orders you
select.

First, mark the orders. In **Orders**, select the refused orders and use the bulk action
**Add tags** to give them an order tag such as `refused`. For how to find them, see
[how to find cancelled COD orders in Shopify admin](/guides/find-cancelled-cod-orders/).

Then build a workflow once:

1. In **Apps > Flow**, create a workflow with the trigger **Order created**.
2. Add a condition: **At least one of** the order's tags is equal to `refused`.
3. On the **True** branch, add the action **Add customer tags** with `cod-refused`.
4. Turn the workflow on. Shopify only lets you run active workflows by hand.

The condition matters. An Order created workflow also runs on every new order, and the condition
stops it from tagging anyone whose order doesn't already carry `refused`.

To run it:

1. In **Orders**, filter to the orders tagged `refused` so they are all on one page.
2. Select them, click the menu icon, and under **Apps** click **Run Flow automation**.
3. Select the workflow and click **Run workflow**.

Shopify limits a bulk run to 50 items, and they must all be on the same page, so work in batches
of 50 or fewer. Try it on one test order before a full batch, and check that the customer got the
tag.

For tagging refusers automatically as orders are cancelled, see
[automatic cod-refused tagging with Shopify Flow](/guides/shopify-flow-tag-cod-refusers/).

## Can you tag customers with a CSV import?

Yes, but read the options carefully. Shopify's import steps are:

1. From your Shopify admin, go to **Customers** and click **Import**.
2. Click **Add file** and choose your customer CSV file (15 MB or smaller).
3. Optional: check **Overwrite existing customers that have the same email or phone number**.
4. Optional: check **Add tags to customers in this csv and use these tags to create a segment**.
5. Click **Import customers**.

What to know before you press import:

- **Overwriting replaces everything.** Shopify says that if you overwrite existing customers with
the same email address or phone number, all of their customer data is replaced, including
tags. A file with only `cod-refused` in the **Tags** column can remove tags you already use.
- **Shopify doesn't say what happens to existing customers when the box is unchecked.** Try a
file with two test customers before you import a long list.
- **Duplicates are skipped.** Customers with duplicate email addresses or phone numbers are
skipped during an import and aren't tagged.
- **Tag format.** In the **Tags** column, separate tags with commas. If you edit the file in a
text editor, put the list in quotation marks, for example `"vip,cod-refused"`.

If you do overwrite, export the customers first. In **Customers**, click **Export**, choose the
customers, and include **Customer tags** under **Fields included**. Add your new tag to the
existing tags in each row rather than replacing them. For customers already in your store, the
bulk **Add tags** action is usually the safer choice.

## How do you remove a tag from many customers?

1. Build a segment for the tag, for example `customer_tags CONTAINS 'cod-refused'`.
2. Open it, tick **Customer name** and select all customers in the segment.
3. Click the menu icon next to **Edit customers**, then **Remove tags**.
4. Choose the tag and click **Save**.

Shopify's help doesn't describe a single button that deletes a tag from the whole store. This
method does the same job.

## What should you know about customer tags?

- Tags aren't case sensitive: `COD-Refused` and `cod-refused` are the same tag.
- Use only letters, numbers and hyphens. Shopify says other characters can make items drop out of
  search results.
- A tag can be up to 255 characters, and a customer can have up to 250 tags.

A tag only changes checkout when a COD rule reads it, and only when the shopper is identified at
checkout. See [how to block COD for specific customers with tags](/guides/block-cod-for-customers/).
Khaleeji COD's refuser scan is another bulk route: it lists customers behind recent cancelled COD
orders, and tags them only when you click **Tag N customers**.
